Back to school

Back to school

The most dreaded term for kids everywhere is “Back to School.” And it is popping up with increasing frequency. Like Christmas sales the back to school signs appear earlier and earlier in the summer, sometimes as early as July, reminding us that there is no such thing as an endless Summer.

End of Summer Fun

Some important health and general reminders are in order to help decrease the stress level. Now is the best time to do shopping. Lines are shorter and more items are in stock. If you prefer to order online, it still a great idea to order early before everything is out of stock in the warehouses.

There is still time to enjoy what remains of the summer. Get out this weekend and fish at your favorite fishing spot, get to that amusement park and get to the ballpark before the season ends.

Back Pack Back to School Safety

You can also begin to get your child ready for school by creating some excitement, via new school supplies like backpacks. However, we often see back and chest pain at Firefly which is often due to strain from a poorly fitted backpack. Some of this can be avoided by following some simple rules. The backpack should have padded shoulder straps. Heavier items should be packed closest to the center of the back. The total weight should not be more than 20% of your child’s body weight at the most.

Back to School Health Forms

We are all busy and health forms and other paperwork are not usually at the top of our to do list. Parents are often caught off guard when they discover that it has been more than a year since their children’s last physical exam. If this happens to you don’t beat yourself up about it. If you are in this situation there are options for getting a quick school or sports physical done if you cannot get an appointment with your child’s pediatrician for their annual physical before the start of school. While Firefly Pediatrics does specialize in Pediatric Urgent care, we are also here to help in a pinch and are available to do school and sports physicals if this is required for school entrance or participation in sports.
